For those who don't know , D9 is a great new producer from The USA. His style can be likened to a blend of 2080 and Kavinsky.Yesterday , I sat down with D9 and we discussed his career , his future plans and his inspirations.
So i'll start
off with the biggest question ,Who
is the person behind D9?
Dan Wilson.
I am a kid that lives here in Provo Utah. I started playing around with keyboards when I was a kid because my dad had them in his home office. He was really nice to let me play on them whenever I wanted pretty much. He also let me play with his sequencer program on his computer a little bit. It was way back in the day, it was a software called Cakewalk. I started getting into playing music a lot more when i was in high School. My friends were in this pretty cool band and they didn't really have a place for me so they put me on keyboards. I loved it! My mom also bought me a playstation game for my birthday one year (after i begged for it) called MTV music maker. It was just a bunch of house/trance loops you could throw together. I really liked it. I was obsessed haha! I wanted to be a DJ to start with, so my mom took me up to Salt Lake City and i went to Kaskades record shop "Mechanized." I got lots of drum and bass records and starting spinning them at small local parties. I watched a lot of skate videos when i was a kid. I loved skating. There was this one video where the skater was talking about the kind of music he was going to be using then it showed some drum and bass. I loved it, that's why I got all those drum and bass records. When I got a bit older i saved up for my first synth, My Micro Korg. It was sweet. I really wanted a sequencer or a sampler but it took me alot longer to save up for one of those when i was a kid. About the time i was 18 i got my first sequencer, a korg electribe. I sat down in my parents basement and recorded my first album Lost Traveler on that. Rumor has it that im part robot, and im not sure if that's true or not. I feel a bit machine like though, I have troubles with intimate emotions alot. I'm pretty introverted, but i love hanging out with friends at times and being kind to people. I love photography and video. I do alot of that for my band myself. I also design alot of my own logos etc. Im into that kind of
PlayStation one for the win , they don't make games like they did back then. :(

I know! I still play my PSone! so many fun games. My favorite game is still Final Fantasy 7. What an awesome game.
-Your music definatley has the video game touch to it, What games would you say influenced you in your music?
And what producers in this sub genre do you like/are inspired by?
There are a ton of games that have infulenced me, but some big ones i would have to say are Outrun 2019 for Sega Genesis, Sonic 2 for Sega Genesis, and Aladdin for Sega Genesis. I can remember being a kid and wishing my job was to make the music for those games. I don't know why i've always loved that synth sound so much, but I just love it. Surprisingly though, i also love the cinematic music from Final Fantasy 7 and 8. The composer Nebuo Uemastu is one of my favorite musicians of all time. I also love the music from Chrono Cross. Donkey Kong Country also had some sweet music, particularly the song when you are in the mine.
I don't know if you can put Kavinsky into the video game sub genre, but I think you can definatly put him into that neo 80s genre. Id love to work with him someday. Wishes and Dreams haha. I also really like what future cop is doing, and the whole vallerie movement. College is a great producer.
-Who is your favorite producer? And who would you love to work with?
Favorite producer... ooo thats hard to nail down to just one person. I love Guy Manuel and Thomas Bangalter from Daft Punk. They had a huge infuluence on me for sure. As i said Kavinsky is awesome. I really like Alan Braxe and Fred Falke. They have that awesome Neo-Disco feel. Ray Lynch is a great producer of New Age. I would have to say those guys are some of my favorites.
- What is the first album you bought?
Michael Jackson Bad on
cassett tape. My mom bought it for me in a gas station! Go mom!
